Exam Format
There are two types of TOEFL exams: the TOEFL Academic Test and the TOEFL Home Edition.
TOEFL Academic Test
The TOEFL Academic Test is the most common type of TOEFL exam. It is a four-section test that is taken in a test center. The sections are:
- Reading: 2 reading passages, 10 questions each,36 minutes
- Listening: 3–4 lectures, 6 questions each, 2–3 conversations, 5 questions each, 41–57 minutes
- Speaking: 6 tasks, 20 minutes
- Writing: 2 tasks, 50 minutes(Integrated Task 1, 20 minutes Academic Discussion Task 2, 10 minutes)
TOEFL Home Edition
The TOEFL Home Edition is a newer type of TOEFL exam that can be taken at home. The sections are the same as the TOEFL Academic Test, but there are some additional requirements for taking the TOEFL Home Edition.

You will also need to download the TOEFL Home Edition software and create an account on the ETS website.
Exam Modules
The Reading section of the TOEFL assesses your ability to understand academic texts in English. You will be asked to read a variety of texts, such as essays, articles, and passages from textbooks. You will then be asked questions about the texts, such as identifying main ideas, understanding details, and making inferences.
The Listening section of the TOEFL test assesses your ability to understand spoken English in an academic setting. You will be asked to listen to a variety of lectures, conversations, and discussions. You will then be asked questions about the recordings, such as identifying main ideas, understanding details, and following instructions.
The Speaking section of the TOEFL test assesses your ability to communicate effectively in spoken English. You will be asked to complete a variety of speaking tasks, such as providing summaries of academic texts, describing charts and graphs, and giving opinions on topics.
The Writing section of the TOEFL test assesses your ability to write effectively in English. You will be asked to complete two writing tasks, a short response and an essay. In the short response task, you will be asked to write a brief response to a prompt. In the essay task, you will be asked to write an essay about a topic related to your academic studies.
The Reading and Listening sections are always taken first, followed by a 10-minute break. The Speaking and Writing sections are then taken consecutively.
