JOHN : Maria, you know I don’t know anything about fashion.
MARIA : But which dress d’you like best?
JOHN : Well, they’re both all right.
MARIA : Only all right?
JOHN : Oh, no. I’m – I’m sure you’ll look very nice in both of them.
MARIA : Harry, that’s no help to me at all. I can’t wear 10 both of them! I want a decision.
JOHN : But after all, it is yours not mine.
MARIA : Oh dear. The blue cotton is very smart but I’m not sure it goes with the hat.
JOHN : You’re not wearing a hat are you?
MARIA : I was going to.
JOHN : But surely no one wears a hat these days.
MARIA : No, I – I suppose they don’t. But surely in a smart society…
JOHN : I honestly don’t know. D’you think I should wear a suit?
MARIA : I would have thought so.
JOHN : But surely with this summer weather, a sports coat would be all right?
MARIA : But that sports coat is such a loud check. I don’t think it would do at Lady Stoke-Newing- ton’s.
JOHN : No perhaps not.
MARIA : Oh, I feel in such a muddle.
JOHN : So do I. Perhaps we should just wear what we want to. A lot of people do these days, or perhaps the answer is not to go at all.
MARIA : You mean rather than make fools of ourselves. I do feel terribly tired.
JOHN : But then again you did want to go.
MARIA : Yes, I would regret missing it. Oh, I don’t know. I wish you were a decisive husband, instead of floundering about.
JOHN : Me floundering about… you’re the one who’s worrying. ‘Shall I wear this?” “Shall I wear 40 that? It’s you who’s uncertain, not me.
MARIA : That’s why I need someone definite.
JOHN : All right. I’ll tell you what we’ll do.
MARIA : What?
JOHN : We’ll toss for it. Heads you wear the blue 45 dress, tails you wear the green. Let money decide everything.
