Germany Increases Student Work Allowance: Great News for International Students

Germany has announced a significant update that benefits international students planning to study and work in the country. The government has increased the annual work allowance for students, giving them more opportunities to gain experience and support their living expenses while studying.

This change is part of Germany’s broader effort to attract global talent and address labor shortages in several sectors.

Key Updates in Germany

Previous Work Rules for International Students

Under the earlier regulations, international students in Germany were allowed to work:

  • 120 full working days per year, or
  • 240 half working days per year

These limits applied to students from non-EU countries who were studying at German universities.

New Work Allowance Rules

With the new update, international students can now work:

  • 140 full working days per year, or
  • 280 half working days per year

This means students now receive 20 additional full working days every year, giving them greater flexibility to earn money and gain professional experience.

What This Means for Students

The updated rules provide several benefits for international students:

  • More earning opportunities while studying
  • Greater exposure to the German job market
  • Additional work experience that can help with future career opportunities

Students can also continue to work:

  • Up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester
  • Full-time during semester breaks

Minimum Wage Increase in Germany

Along with the increased work allowance, Germany’s minimum wage is expected to rise to €13.90 per hour in 2026, up from €12.82.

This increase means students working part-time jobs will be able to earn better wages while managing their studies.

Why Germany Is Becoming a Top Study Destination

Germany continues to attract thousands of international students every year due to several advantages:

  • World-class universities
  • Many tuition-free public universities
  • Strong employment opportunities after graduation
  • A stable economy and growing demand for skilled professionals

These new work policies make Germany even more appealing for students looking for quality education combined with career opportunities.
