The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships are anticipated for outstanding Indians to pursue a master’s degree programme at select U.S. colleges and universities in the fields such As economics, Environmental Engineering, Higher Education Administration, International Affairs, International Legal Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Public Administration, Public Health, Urban and Regional Planning, and Tourism. Student with bright academics can apply to this scholarship.
These fellowships are for self motivated people exhibit leadership qualities, have achieved the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in the United States, have at least three years of professional work experience, and are determined to return to their communities and give back. The fellowships last for a year or two.
Grant Benefits
The fellowship will provide J-1 visa support, round-trip economy class air travel from fellow’s home city to the host institution in the U.S., funding for tuition and fees, living and related costs, and accident and sickness coverage per U.S. Government guidelines.*
The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships provide no financial support for dependents.
* USIEF funding may not cover all costs and the fellow may need to supplement grant benefits with other resources.
Eligibility Requirements for the applicants.

- must have earned a U.S. bachelor’s degree equivalent from an accredited Indian university with at least a 55 percent grade point average.
- The applicant must have either a four-year bachelor’s degree or a completed master’s degree; or, if the bachelor’s degree is less than four years, a full-time postgraduate diploma from an accredited Indian institution;
- must have at least three years of full-time, paid professional work experience related to the proposed field of study by the application deadline; should have leadership and community service experience;
- not be enrolled in a U.S. degree programme or have another degree from a U.S. university; if working, carefully follow the rules about employer endorsement. Obtain, if necessary, the employer’s endorsement on the FNMasters Employer’s Endorsement Form from the relevant administrative body.
- The employer must state that leave will be given for the duration of the fellowship. The FNMasters Employer’s Endorsement Form may be downloaded by the applicant from the USIEF website.
Study / courses that are considered for this scholarship.
Each applicant must choose one field of study that matches his/her chief area of interest. The following field descriptions are illustrative, and applicants should note that individual academic host institution programs of study may differ in course offerings, subspecialties, and academic requirements.
Applications are invited in the following fields only:
- Arts and Culture Management including Heritage Conservation and Museum Studies: The study of all facets of managing art and culture, including management of for-profit and nonprofit art institutions, heritage conservation, museum studies, and arts administration. These grants are for arts management, not for earning graduate degrees in fine, applied, or historical art or design.
- Economics: The study of economic trends, resource distribution, production, demand, and government economic policy’s influence on the economy. Subspecialties include, among others: macroeconomics, microeconomics, labour economics, agricultural economics, public finance, and international and development economics.
- Environmental Science/Studies: The study of the environment in all of its complexity. Environmental toxicology, resource management, pollution prevention, environmental law, environmental engineering, and analysis of environmental policy are a few examples of subspecialties.
- Higher Education Administration: The study of all aspects of higher education administration including policy planning and management, student affairs, academic affairs, admissions and enrollment management, curriculum design, learning assessment, financial management, alumni and community relations, internationalization of higher education, quality assurance, and use of technology in higher education, among others.
- International Affairs: The study of international relations, including foreign policy, conflict resolution, international security and strategic issues, international economic policy, environmental and energy policy, issues relating to refugees and migration, human rights, and gender policy, among others.
- International Legal Studies:The study of all facets of international law, such as business law, trade law, employment law, labour law, environmental law, international organisations, human rights law, intellectual property law, securities law, financial regulation law, litigation law, and tax law, among others.
- Journalism and Mass Communication: The studies of all facets of mass media, including both standalone and convergent platforms including print, television, and new media. Media management and communications research and strategy are examples of sub-specialties.
- Public Administration: The study of management as it pertains to public service organisations or local, state, or federal government agencies. Policy analysis, nonprofit management, global development, public sector management, public finance, healthcare management, and city/urban planning are just a few examples of subspecialties.
- Public Health: The research of all facets of public health, including biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, epidemiology, health legislation, bioethics, and human rights, as well as health policy, management, and delivery methods for public health.
- Urban and Regional Planning: The study of all facets of urban and regional planning, such as waste management, equitability, public space programming and governance, water and sanitation, sustainable infrastructure, and transportation policy, planning, and improvements. Other topics covered include land use, community visioning, urban resilience, housing and real estate development, and equitability.
- Women’s Studies/Gender Studies: Studies of topics such as development, health, history, education, sexuality, law, and policy that are pertinent to women, feminism, and gender.
